Indonesia, renowned for its vast nickel reserves, has inaugurated Southeast Asia's first EV battery manufacturing plant in Karawang, West Java. HLI Green Power, a joint venture between Indonesia Battery Corporation, Hyundai Motor and LG Energy Solution, owns this state-of-the-art facility.
CATL has laid the foundation stone for a battery cell factory in Indonesia in collaboration with its joint venture partner, Indonesia Battery Corporation. The factory in Karawang in West Java is scheduled to go into operation by the end of 2026 with an initial capacity of 6.9 gigawatt hours (GWh), and will later be expanded to 15 GWh.
The battery plant integrates with Hyundai's auto factory, which plans to produce 50,000 units of the Kona Electric SUV per year using Indonesian-made batteries. Hyundai and LG Energy Solution are preparing for the second phase of the battery plant, which involves an additional US$2bn investment to increase capacity by another 20 GWh.
The government in Jakarta is developing these raw material deposits in conjunction with adjacent inland industrial processes, such as nickel processing, cathode materials, battery production and vehicle plants. In 2024, Hyundai and LGES commissioned a battery cell factory in Indonesia. Hyundai opened a vehicle plant in Indonesia in 2022.
Hong Kong-listed REPT Battero has announced plans to invest in a new battery production facility in Indonesia. The company board approved the investment on Jan. 10, with operations to be handled by its Indonesian subsidiary.
The launch of the country’s first battery plant on Wednesday is part of Indonesia ’s push to move up the global EV supply chain. Indonesia has the world’s largest reserves of nickel, a crucial component in EV batteries and steelmaking.
The global containerized energy storage and solar container market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with commercial and industrial energy storage demand increasing by over 400% in the past three years. Containerized energy storage solutions now account for approximately 50% of all new modular energy storage installations worldwide. North America leads with 45% market share, driven by industrial power needs and commercial facility demand. Europe follows with 40% market share, where containerized energy storage systems have provided reliable electricity for manufacturing plants and commercial operations. Asia-Pacific represents the fastest-growing region at 60% CAGR, with manufacturing innovations reducing containerized energy storage system prices by 30% annually. Emerging markets are adopting containerized energy storage for industrial applications, commercial buildings, and utility projects, with typical payback periods of 1-3 years. Modern containerized energy storage installations now feature integrated systems with 500kWh to 5MWh capacity at costs below $200 per kWh for complete industrial energy solutions.
Technological advancements are dramatically improving containerized energy storage systems and solar container performance while reducing operational costs for various applications. Next-generation containerized energy storage has increased efficiency from 75% to over 95% in the past decade, while solar container costs have decreased by 80% since 2010.
