A consortium led by Switzerland-based construction company Orllati was selected to build and operate a solar park of up to 105 MW in connection capacity for 30 years including a 15-year contract for difference. Kosovo has the potential of capturing solar energy directly and converting it to electricity. The region of highest solar potential based on global horizontal irradiation is the southwestern part of Kosovo, centred around the city of Gjakova. Solar power is already used on the roofs of some buildings.
The New Kosovo power plant is part of the government's plans to reform Kosovo's energy sector.
