There are now 185,798 home battery units installed across Australia. In the second half of 2024, 28.4 per cent of rooftop solar installations had an accompanying small-scale battery installed. According to the Australian Energy Regulator, in 2024, 27% of customers with rooftop solar exported their energy back into the grid.
Residents in the Northern Territory take the trophy for household batteries, with 15.9% of all homes with solar also having a battery. Climate Council Fellow and energy expert, Andrew Stock, said: “Household, community, and grid-scale battery storage plays a vital role in Australia’s renewable energy transition.
In 2024, there were over 28,000 new residential battery installations, representing a 30% increase from the previous year. Australia now has 121,551 battery systems in homes nationwide as of early 2025 PV Magazine Australia.
Rooftop solar power’s energy generation share was 12.4% for all of 2024, up from 11.2% in 2023 and 6.5% in 2020 says the CEC. Many more interesting stats about solar PV are included in the report. New South Wales had the most battery sales in the second half of 2024 with 14,686.
In June, Energy Minister Chris Bowen announced the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) would support up to 370 community batteries as part of Round 1 of its Community Batteries Fund, bringing the total amount of community batteries supported by the federal government to more than 420 across Australia [i].
