Abstract: Flow batteries, with their low environmental impact, inherent scalability and extended cycle life, are a key technology toward long duration energy storage, but their success hinges on new sustainable chemistries. This paper explores two chemistries, based on abundant and non-critical materials, namely all-iron and the zinc-iron.
There are different types of flow batteries and they are the following: redox flow batteries, hybrid flow batteries, and fewer batteries for membrane. The costlier one is the membrane flow battery and their battery parts are very brittle and can be easily corroded by the reactants of the operation.
Flow batteries consist of energy subsystems, power subsystems, and secondary components. The energy subsystem comprises the electrolyte and electrolyte reservoir, with the volume of the electrolyte playing a crucial role in determining the energy capacity of the RFB.

To overcome these disadvantages, a growing effort has been focused on developing novel systems to increase energy density and operating voltage. This trend, which has been referred to as the ‘renaissance of the flow batteries’ (Ref. 6), is very similar to the interest in fuel-cell technologies in the early 2000s.
Lithium-ion batteries with flow systems. Commercial LIBs consist of cylindrical, prismatic and pouch configurations, in which energy is stored within a limited space 3. Accordingly, to effectively increase energy-storage capacity, conventional LIBs have been combined with flow batteries.
