Set for a grid connection in 2025 this project will deliver power to up to 96.000 households. Sungrow will supply 320 units of its cutting-edge liquid-cooled energy storage system PowerTitan for the ENGIE BESS project in Vilvoorde. The PowerTitan is an efficient, safe, and innovative storage solution that supports ENGIE to deliver energy.
ENGIE is also generating two other BESS projects in Belgium which already have credentials in place, a 100-MW/400-MWh scheme in Kallo and an 80-MW/320-MWh battery in Drogenbos. The firm targets 10 GW of battery capability globally by 2030. At the end of 2023, it contained 1.3 GW of battery capacity in function and 3.6 GW secured under development.
Belgium is one of Europe’s most developed markets for large-scale energy storage, with grid-scale lithium-ion BESS projects being deployed starting in 2020/21. 2025 has seen the start of construction on a 440MWh project from owners BStor and Energy Solutions Group and a 400MWh from utility and power generation firm Engie.
The system will be one of the largest ever installed in Europe with a power capacity of 200MW/800MWh and is the first BESS project Sungrow will supply in Belgium. Set for a grid connection in 2025 this project will deliver power to up to 96.000 households.
The 25 MW Brecht BESS project will store up to four-hours of renewable charge for supply to the electricity grid during periods of high demand. This is also where grid stabilization comes in. The BESS stores excess renewable energy when in surplus, and releases more as needed in times of demand.
The global containerized energy storage and solar container market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with commercial and industrial energy storage demand increasing by over 400% in the past three years. Containerized energy storage solutions now account for approximately 50% of all new modular energy storage installations worldwide. North America leads with 45% market share, driven by industrial power needs and commercial facility demand. Europe follows with 40% market share, where containerized energy storage systems have provided reliable electricity for manufacturing plants and commercial operations. Asia-Pacific represents the fastest-growing region at 60% CAGR, with manufacturing innovations reducing containerized energy storage system prices by 30% annually. Emerging markets are adopting containerized energy storage for industrial applications, commercial buildings, and utility projects, with typical payback periods of 1-3 years. Modern containerized energy storage installations now feature integrated systems with 500kWh to 5MWh capacity at costs below $200 per kWh for complete industrial energy solutions.
Technological advancements are dramatically improving containerized energy storage systems and solar container performance while reducing operational costs for various applications. Next-generation containerized energy storage has increased efficiency from 75% to over 95% in the past decade, while solar container costs have decreased by 80% since 2010.
